MHI Vestas preferred turbine supplier for Navitus Bay

Blades to be made in Isle of Wight factory...

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind (MHI Vestas) has been selected by Navitus Bay as the preferred turbine supplier for the proposed offshore wind farm off the Dorset, Hampshire and Isle of Wight coasts. The turbines’ 80m long blades will be made in MHI Vestas’ factory in Newport on the Isle of Wight, supporting the 200 local jobs currently being created there.

MHI Vestas will supply its latest V164-8MW wind turbine. The efficiency and power of these turbines means fewer are required than would have been the case with other, less-powerful turbines. The maximum number of turbines would therefore fall from 194 to 121 for the 970MW project and reduce from 105 to 78 for the smaller 630MW option*.

This marks the first major step in the procurement process for the wind farm. Further announcements will enable other suppliers in the region to compete to supply the project. MHI Vestas will now be involved in the negotiations to select the wind farm’s operations and maintenance base from a short list of Poole, Portland and Yarmouth.
