Local Events in Dorchester this July

What's on in Dorchester this July?

Dorchester is rich in history and hosts some great family events throughout the year. From farmers markets, to fairs, concerts and live theatre performances, there is always something to do in Dorchester.

Wessex General Events:

4 July – King’s Shilling – Dorchester Shire Hall - 8pm (doors and bar 7.30pm) - £7 / £5 members and concessions - King’s Shilling tells the true stories of ordinary folk who have fought for their King and country. From Waterloo to the Great War, these tales of extraordinary Dorset soldiers and women are surprising, humorous and poignant.

5 July – The Tempest- Miracle Theatre at Dorchester Arts - OPEN AIR THEATRE – Maumbury Rings 7.30pm (refreshments from 6.30pm – see below) £12/£10/£8/£30 family (2 adults + 2 children) - Bring a picnic and enjoy great open-air theatre. Hot chocolate, teas and cakes from 6.30pm - With the original text respectfully shaken and stirred, director Bill Scott liberally applies Miracle’s offbeat and humorous style to this great classic.

18 – 19 July –Murder Play– Somerleigh Players at Dorchester Arts - 7.30pm (doors and bar 7pm) - £10 (includes food) - Jane and Peter wake up after a dinner party at their employer’s house to find him dead. Jane, his wife, has killed him and she wants her guests to help dispose of his body. She says she has committed the perfect crime…but it transpires that the “murder” is really an elaborate practical joke. Or is it?

20 July –Peter and the Wolf – Little Wolf Gang at Dorchester Arts - 3pm (doors and bar 2.30pm) - £8 /£6 /£26 family ticket - A spellbinding live performance of a well-loved family classic, brimming with vibrant storytelling and musical delights. The show’s centrepiece – Prokofiev’s tuneful tale of a brave little boy’s adventurous encounter with a wolf – is complemented by two other short Russian stories, seamlessly interweaving storytelling with specially arranged music, including Ravel’s Bolero. Storyteller Martin Maudsley is accompanied by virtuoso musicians Eddy Jay (accordion), David Adams (bassoon) and Fiona Barrow (violin)
